Following on from last year’s well-received 12”, ‘Still/ Ha’ from Dance, Blank Mind return with a debut release from Alan Johnson.
Tom Neilan and Gareth Kirby are Alan Johnson. ‘Goron Sound/Fickle,’ takes influence from the wider branches and offshoots of early dubstep. Their highly-torqued sound dextrously contorts these familiar elements, carving a singular path for themselves. As disorientating as they are groove ridden; collages of samples are weaved around rich swathes of sub bass, uprooted by tough, tribal percussions.
Available commercially for the first time since its initial 1991 release, Spiegel’s fantastic “intelligent instrument” album testifies to the power of an artist who pushed the boundaries of electronic music to unexplored territory. Bandcamp Album of the Day Jan 11, 2019
